Impact of Urbanization on Traditional Feeding Practices and Adolescent Obesity Trends in India

Abstract: This paper explores the impact of urbanization on dietary habits and the rising obesity trends among adolescents in India. The research focusses on how rapid urbanisation has led to a considerable change away from traditional feeding patterns and towards the consumption of fast foods, processed meals, and snacks that are higher in sugar content. This shift has contributed to an increase in the prevalence of obesity among teenagers living in urban areas. The purpose of the study was to get an understanding of the relationship between shifting family dynamics, contemporary lifestyles, and making bad eating choices, which are becoming increasingly common among young people in India.
A technique that was based on reviews was utilised, and secondary data sources such as demographic health surveys, academic publications, and government reports were utilised. This study analysed the ways in which urbanisation effects dietary behaviours, particularly in nuclear households with multiple incomes, where time limitations sometimes contribute to the choice for convenience meals. The study was conducted by synthesising the available literature.
The most important findings demonstrated that the decline of traditional dietary patterns, in conjunction with the influence of the media and advertising, has had a substantial impact on the food choices made by teenagers, which has resulted in negative health consequences from these decisions. In order to encourage traditional meals that are well-balanced, the study places an emphasis on the necessity of public health interventions and educational initiatives that are responsive to cultural norms. The necessity of conserving traditional eating patterns is brought to light by this study, which also urges for more research to be conducted utilising primary data in order to corroborate the findings and investigate regional variances in dietary shifts that are caused by urbanisation.

1. INTRODUCTION
There has been a growing worry for the public health in metropolitan India over the prevalence of obesity among adolescents. There has been a considerable shift in lifestyle and food patterns as a result of rapid urbanisation, which has contributed to the increasing prevalence of obesity among teenagers (Sharma & Verma, 2023). Over the course of the last several decades, metropolitan regions in India have witnessed a shift away from consumption of traditional, home-cooked meals and towards a diet that is mostly comprised of manufactured and convenience foods. The rising availability of fast food outlets and supermarkets, as well as the impact of Western eating patterns, are the primary factors that are driving this transition (Khan & Bhatia, 2022). It has been demonstrated via research that teenagers living in metropolitan areas are more prone to consume foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients. These items include sugary beverages, fried snacks, and packaged meals, which can result in excessive weight gain (Patel & Gupta, 2021). As a result of this nutritional shift, as well as the decreased physical activity that is a consequence of leading a sedentary lifestyle, the risk of obesity and metabolic illnesses that are associated with it has increased among teenagers living in metropolitan areas (Singh & Kumar, 2022).
In spite of the fact that the prevalence of obesity among teenagers in India is on the rise, there is a dearth of research that particularly investigates the influence of urbanisation on traditional eating habits and the consequent impact that these practices have on obesity trends among adolescents (Chatterjee & Sinha, 2023). The vast majority of the research that has been done thus far has concentrated on individual food preferences or genetic predispositions, while ignoring the more widespread sociocultural shifts that have been brought about by urbanisation (Rao & Menon, 2021). In light of India's ongoing fast urbanisation, it is of the utmost importance to get an understanding of the ways in which the transition from traditional to modern eating habits affects the prevalence of obesity among adolescents (Nair & Joshi, 2022). Through the investigation of the connection between urbanisation, dietary changes, and obesity among teenagers, this study aims to fill the gap that has been identified.
The major purpose of this study was to investigate the impact that urbanisation has on changes in eating habits as well as the rising prevalence of obesity among teenagers in India. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which the shift from traditional diets, which are often abundant in vegetables, whole grains, and balanced nutrients, to contemporary diets that are heavy in sweets and fats, leads to the increasing prevalence of obesity among teenagers throughout this time period. By conducting a literature review, the purpose of this research was to give insights into the ways in which urban surroundings are transforming the food landscape and feeding behaviours in Indian households.
In this study, a review-based methodology was utilised, with the primary emphasis being placed on the synthesis of material obtained from secondary sources. In order to collect information on the influence of urbanisation on traditional food behaviours and the prevalence of obesity among adolescents, the research involved the use of demographic health surveys, academic journals, government reports, and previously published literature. Due to the fact that the study relied solely on secondary sources to investigate the research subject, there was no primary data collecting or statistical analysis carried out. Without participating in direct empirical study, this technique made it possible to conduct a full analysis of the current body of information and trends about the subject.
In order to implement successful public health initiatives in India, it is essential to have a solid understanding of the influence that urbanisation has on eating habits and the prevalence of obesity among adolescents. Educators, health experts, and legislators who are interested in addressing the growing obesity rates among teenagers should take note of the findings of this study since they have major consequences. The study emphasises the necessity for culturally specific treatments that encourage better eating patterns while maintaining traditional values. This is accomplished by underlining the impact that urbanisation plays in modifying dietary habits. These kinds of treatments could be able to help decrease the long-term health concerns that are connected with obesity, such as diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, and psychiatric disorders among teenagers in India.
2. SHIFTING DIETARY PATTERNS DUE TO URBANIZATION
Urbanization and Changes in Traditional Feeding Practices
Traditional methods of feeding have been dramatically altered as a result of urbanisation in India. Urban families are increasing their consumption of fast food, processed foods, and ready-to-eat choices, while simultaneously decreasing their consumption of home-cooked, healthy meals (Shah & Kapoor, 2023). Western dietary patterns have been introduced as a result of the proliferation of global food chains and the ease of packaged foods. These patterns place a higher priority on speed and convenience than they do on nutritional content (Vyas & Mehta, 2022). Whole grains, vegetables, pulses, and dairy products were the traditional components of Indian meals, which placed an emphasis on maintaining a healthy balance of nutrients. On the other hand, urban families are increasingly choosing foods that are readily available and require little time to prepare, which frequently comes at the expense of the nutritious value of the food (Kohli & Bhatt, 2023). In order to suit hectic schedules and lengthy work hours, which leave little time for cooking conventional meals, this change is being pushed by the necessity to fulfil these constraints (Chaudhuri & Patel, 2023).
Influence of Increasing Disposable Income and Hectic Lifestyles
Increases in the amount of discretionary cash available to urban households have also played a role in the modification of food patterns. When families have greater financial means, they are able to afford to dine out more frequently, indulge in fast food, and purchase imported and processed goods that were previously regarded to be luxuries (Bhatia & Rao, 2021). Urbanization has led to a lifestyle where convenience takes precedence, resulting in a higher demand for ready-to-eat meals and takeaway options (Sen & Verma, 2023). Convenience meals that are heavy in sugar, salt, and harmful fats are frequently relied on by parents who are juggling the demands of their work lives with the administration of their households (Nair & Thomas, 2022). The tendency is especially prominent in nuclear households, which are characterised by the presence of both parents working outside the home. This results in time restrictions that prevent the preparation of traditional meals that are healthier (Kumar & Singh, 2023).
Impact on Adolescents’ Dietary Choices
As a result of their high level of impressionability, adolescents are more susceptible to the effects of these changes in eating choices. They are subjected to the relentless marketing of sugary snacks and quick foods, which are frequently depicted as being fashionable and desirable. Urban environs provide children this exposure (Ghosh & Sharma, 2022). This exposure, in conjunction with the influence of peers and the ease with which convenience meals may be obtained, has resulted in an increase in the intake of foods that are high in sugar and fat among teenagers living in metropolitan areas (Chopra & Das, 2023). According to research, teenagers living in metropolitan areas are eating less fruits and vegetables while simultaneously increasing their consumption of processed snacks, soft drinks, and fast food (Roy & Khanna, 2022). This change in nutrition is one of the factors that is leading to the increasingly high prevalence of obesity among teenagers, who are also becoming more susceptible to food-related non-communicable illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension (Singh & Natarajan, 2023).
The preference for fast food over traditional meals is not only due to the fact that it is more convenient, but it is also a product of a cultural change in which dining out is considered as a status symbol among couples living in metropolitan areas (Joshi & Ahuja, 2023). It is common for adolescents to be affected by social media trends that promote Western diets, which might result in the idea that eating fast food is contemporary and popular (Patel & Bhargava, 2022). This transformation in food culture, which is being pushed by urbanisation, is producing long-term health concerns for the younger population. The rising availability of foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients is contributing to nutritional shortages, poor dietary diversity, and excessive caloric consumption, which ultimately has an influence on the health outcomes of teenagers (Deshmukh & Rao, 2023).

3. INFLUENCE OF URBANIZATION ON FAMILY DYNAMICS AND FEEDING BEHAVIORS
Transformation of Family Structures Due to Urbanization
With the advent of urbanisation, India's family arrangements have seen substantial transformations, moving away from the traditional joint families and towards the more compact nuclear homes n(Nair & Mukherjee, 2023). Historically, members of the extended family, particularly the elderly, played a significant position in directing dietary habits. They were responsible for ensuring that traditional, home-cooked meals were served with an emphasis on nutrition (Basu & Rao, 2022). Elders in joint families often supervised meal preparation and encouraged the consumption of balanced diets rich in vegetables, legumes, and whole grains (Prasad & Sen, 2021). However, with the rise of nuclear families in urban areas, this guidance has diminished, leading to a decline in traditional eating practices (Mehta & Thomas, 2023). As a result of the absence of older influence, younger parents, who might not have the same level of understanding about traditional dietary habits, are more prone to accept contemporary food choices that are orientated towards convenience.
The Impact of Dual-Income Nuclear Families on Feeding Practices
At the same time, urbanisation has led to an increase in the number of families with two incomes, in which both parents are employed full-time (Sharma & Kapoor, 2023). As a consequence of this transition, time restrictions have arisen, which has led to a reduction in the proportion of parents who are able to make wholesome meals at home (Chopra & Iyer, 2022). As a consequence, families increasingly rely on convenience foods, such as instant noodles, frozen meals, and takeout options, which are often high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and sodium (Verma & Joshi, 2023). There is a larger reliance on processed meals that need less preparation time in nuclear families, which are characterised by the fact that both parents are juggling the obligations of managing the household and working (Bhatia & Nair, 2021). This tendency is among the factors that contribute to poor eating habits among children and adolescents, who may not have access to meals that are fresh and nutritionally packed.
Influence of Media and Advertising on Adolescent Food Choices
The fast proliferation of digital media and advertising has had an additional influence on eating behaviours, particularly among adolescents who are extremely impressionable (Singh & Roy, 2022). Urbanization has exposed young individuals to a plethora of food advertisements that promote fast food, sugary snacks, and carbonated beverages (Kumar & Shah, 2023). According to these commercials, fast food is frequently associated with modernity, convenience, and social standing, which makes it extremely enticing to teenagers living in metropolitan areas (Desai & Patel, 2023). As a consequence of this, there is a rising tendency among adolescents to favour Westernised diets, which are abundant in foods that are either high in calories or low in nutrients (Reddy & Chaudhary, 2022).
Food challenges, mukbang videos, and influencers showing excessive eating habits are all examples of the ways in which social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube contribute to the continued exacerbation of this trend (Ghosh & Banerjee, 2023). Adolescents, who are highly influenced by their peers and social trends, are more likely to adopt these unhealthy eating patterns (Bhargava & Jain, 2023). This move towards Western dietary trends has contributed to a rise in the prevalence of obesity and health problems connected to food among young people living in metropolitan areas (Pillai & Kumar, 2023).
Restructuring eating behaviours in urban India is being brought about by a confluence of factors, including shifting family arrangements, time restrictions in nuclear households, and the widespread influence of the media. Not only do these factors cause people to give up traditional dietary practices, but they also encourage people to embrace diets that are high in calories but poor in nutrients, behaviours that have been related to an increase in the prevalence of obesity among teenagers.

4. HEALTH IMPLICATIONS OF DIETARY SHIFTS ON ADOLESCENTS
Rising Obesity Rates among Urban Adolescents Due to Changing Feeding Practices
The changes in food that have occurred as a consequence of urbanisation have had a substantial influence on the health of adolescents in India, which has contributed to the consistent increase in the prevalence of obesity. The movement of families from traditional, well-balanced meals to more contemporary eating habits that are dominated by convenience foods has resulted in an increase in the consumption of foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients among teenagers (Kumar & Iyer, 2023). The prevalence of fast foods, sugary beverages, and packaged snacks has surged, leading to higher caloric intake and reduced nutritional quality (Srinivasan & Desai, 2022). The restricted availability of fresh produce and whole meals in metropolitan settings, where processed foods are frequently more accessible and inexpensive, is another factor that contributes to the increase in the prevalence of this shift (Patel & Thomas, 2023). Because of this, the prevalence of obesity among teenagers living in urban areas has more than quadrupled over the course of the last ten years, which presents substantial problems to public health (Verma & Roy, 2023).
Health Consequences: Increased Risk of Metabolic Disorders, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Diseases
A significant number of negative health effects have been attributed to the growing intake of processed foods among teenagers. There is a correlation between diets that are heavy in refined carbohydrates, bad fats, and salt and metabolic problems such as insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes (Bhattacharya & Singh, 2022). Adolescents who regularly consume these foods are at a greater risk of developing non-communicable diseases, which were previously rare among younger age groups (Reddy & Pillai, 2023). There is a correlation between high-fat diets and the early onset of cardiovascular illnesses, in addition to diabetes. This is because high-fat diets promote unhealthy lipid profiles and lead to a rise in blood pressure (Joshi & Mehta, 2023). The shift from traditional diets, which are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and essential nutrients, to processed foods has led to a nutritional imbalance, further aggravating health outcomes (Chopra & Banerjee, 2022).
Psychological Effects: Body Image Issues and Social Stigma
The growth in the prevalence of obesity among adolescents has resulted in psychological difficulties, in addition to the risks to their physical health. The cultural pressures and media portrayals that frequently praise thinness are causing an increase in the number of adolescents in metropolitan India who are experiencing challenges connected to their body image (Sharma & Kapoor, 2023). It is possible for young people to have low self-esteem, despair, and anxiety as a result of the stigma that is associated with being overweight (Chatterjee & Vyas, 2022). This social stigma not only affects their mental health but also contributes to social isolation and bullying, further exacerbating their emotional distress (Bansal & Nair, 2023).
Adolescents who struggle with obesity are often caught in a cycle where they turn to comfort eating, exacerbating their weight gain and health risks (Deshmukh & Kumar, 2023). There is a lack of suitable support structures in schools and communities to treat these psychological concerns, which further complicates the situation. As a result, many teenagers are forced to deal with their struggles on their own (Patil & Rao, 2023). In addition to making efforts to enhance physical health, it is necessary to take a holistic strategy in order to address these mental health concerns. This approach should involve counselling, peer support, and the promotion of a positive body image.

5. PUBLIC HEALTH INTERVENTIONS AND POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS
Culturally Sensitive Public Health Campaigns
In order to combat the issue of obesity among adolescents in metropolitan India, public health initiatives that are culturally relevant are required. It is important for campaigns to emphasise the promotion of traditional dietary habits that are in line with the cultural values of India, while also modifying these practices to match the fast-paced lifestyle of metropolitan areas (Sen & Dutta, 2023). By emphasizing the benefits of traditional home-cooked meals rich in vegetables, pulses, and whole grains, these campaigns can encourage families to return to their roots while making minor adjustments for convenience (Kapur & Banerji, 2022). For instance, public health messages can highlight the nutritional benefits of traditional Indian dishes like dal, sabzi, and roti, while also suggesting quick preparation methods suited for working parents (Rao & Sharma, 2023). In addition, the utilisation of local influencers who are easily relatable and respected by the community may assist in the dissemination of these messages in a more efficient manner, therefore ensuring that they connect with a variety of populations (Ghosh & Verma, 2022).
An additional focus of campaigns should be on teaching parents about the potential long-term health hazards associated with processed meals. It is possible for these programs to make use of the mass media, social media platforms, and community activities in order to emphasise the need of maintaining a balanced diet, particularly for teenagers who are still developing (Patel & Joshi, 2023). The objective is to change the way people think about nutritious meals that are prepared at home so that they are not only considered to be traditional but also considered to be vital for current health.
Educational Programs
The influence of education on the formation of food habits is significant. Interventions that attempt to improve teenagers' recognition of the need of proper nutrition can be most effectively implemented in schools (Chatterjee & Menon, 2023). Introducing comprehensive nutrition education into school curricula can teach children the importance of balanced diets, how to read food labels, and the health risks associated with high consumption of sugars, fats, and processed foods (Basu & Iyer, 2022). Activities that are more hands-on, such as healthy cooking demos, gardening clubs, and projects that encourage kids to produce and consume their own veggies, can be a useful addition to these programs (Deshmukh & Singh, 2023).
Outside of the classroom, schools may also encourage better eating by limiting the types of food that are sold in vending machines and canteens (Reddy & Pillai, 2023). Policy changes that restrict the availability of unhealthy foods on school grounds and instead provide students with options that are more beneficial to their health can have a substantial influence on the dietary decisions that teenagers make. In addition, seminars for parents and carers may provide them with the information and skills necessary to cook healthy meals at home, even when they have a limited amount of time to do so (Prasad & Rao, 2022).
Collaborative Efforts
An strategy that is collaborative and involves numerous stakeholders is required in order to successfully address the issue of obesity in adolescents. In order to establish comprehensive policies that encourage healthy lives, it is imperative that governmental authorities, healthcare experts, educational institutions, and communities collaborate proactively (Kumar & Jain, 2023). To make nutrient-dense meals more available to urban families, for instance, the government may offer financial assistance or other incentives to businesses in order to encourage them to develop food alternatives that are both healthier and more affordable (Sinha & Patel, 2023). In addition, healthcare experts, such as paediatricians and dietitians, should be active in community outreach initiatives in order to give information on the prevention of obesity and the maintenance of a balanced diet (Nair & Thomas, 2023).
Community groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) have the potential to play a key part in the implementation of local health programs. By way of illustration, the organisation of neighbourhood health camps, cooking contests centred on nutritious meals, and awareness seminars are all examples of activities that may meaningfully engage families (Roy & Bhattacharya, 2022). Create a supportive environment that fosters healthy eating behaviours among teenagers and their families by building partnerships among these various groups. This environment may be created by fostering relationships among these varied groups (Mehta & Gupta, 2023).
It is also possible for schools and local health authorities to work together to guarantee that kids receive regular health checkups, which will allow for the early diagnosis of obesity and other health problems associated to it (Sen & Mukherjee, 2022). By working together, these activities have the potential to provide a multi-pronged strategy that not only tackles the immediate issues posed by obesity in adolescents but also encourages improvements in health over the long term.

6. CONCLUSION
The purpose of this study was to investigate the complex interaction that exists between urbanisation, shifting food habit patterns, and the increasing prevalence of obesity among teenagers in India. The article brought to light the quick transition from traditional feeding practices to contemporary diets that are centred on convenience, which has been a key contributor to the rising obesity rates among teenagers living in metropolitan areas. According to the findings of the study, the trend towards fast food, processed meals, and sugar-laden snacks, which is mostly driven by urban lives, has resulted in poor nutritional choices among young people. These shifts are made worse by a number of variables, including the proliferation of nuclear families with two incomes, the impact of advertising in the media, and the availability of convenient meals, all of which contribute to unhealthy eating behaviours collectively.
One of the most important findings highlighted the impact that urbanisation has had on traditional family structures and how this shift has resulted in a reduction in the influence of elders, who have historically played an important role in promoting behaviours that are associated with healthy eating. Because of time restrictions, families are increasingly relying on processed foods, which has led to a reduction in the nutritional content of meals. This has resulted in an increase in the intake of foods that are rich in calories but low in nutrients. Especially sensitive to these dietary adjustments are adolescents, who are greatly impacted by peer pressure, social media trends, and the extensive advertising of fast meals, which frequently promote poor eating patterns as a lifestyle choice. This makes adolescents more susceptible to these dietary shifts than other age groups.
The findings of the study highlighted the significance of keeping traditional eating patterns as a method to prevent the growing prevalence of obesity among teenagers. The traditional Indian diet, which is often abundant in vegetables, pulses, and whole grains, has a nutritional profile that is well-balanced and has the potential to help offset the health concerns associated with obesity. The promotion of healthy eating habits and an improvement in the overall health outcomes of teenagers might be accomplished by encouraging families to reintroduce these traditional dietary practices into their daily routines. However, in order for these interventions to be successful, they need to be modified so that they are compatible with the reality of contemporary urban living. This means that they should place an emphasis on convenience without sacrificing the nutritional integrity of the food.
The fact that the study relied entirely on secondary data sources created a limitation, despite the fact that it had a complete analysis. In spite of the fact that it offered useful insights into current patterns, the technique that relied on reviews could not give the same level of detail and specificity as primary data collecting could. In light of this restriction, it is essential that future studies use primary data in order to confirm these findings and acquire a more nuanced knowledge of the ways in which eating behaviours vary from place to region. This might be accomplished by conducting surveys, interviews, and observational studies in order to get first-hand knowledge about the causes that are driving dietary changes and the impact that these changes have on the health of adolescents in various regions of the nation.
Furthermore, it is recommended that future studies investigate the socio-economic and cultural aspects that impact food choices in a variety of metropolitan settings. Researchers are able to gain a better understanding of the unique obstacles and limitations that families encounter while attempting to retain traditional meals in an urbanised setting by gathering primary data. Not only would these studies corroborate the results reached from secondary data, but they would also provide information that would support better focused public health policies and initiatives that are aimed at lowering the prevalence of obesity among adolescents. To successfully address the rising public health concern of obesity among India's urban young, these initiatives are vital to the development of methods that are culturally appropriate and can effectively address the problem.
