This paper examines the critical relationship between educational policies, mental well-being, and economic productivity, emphasizing the role of early intervention in shaping a resilient and efficient workforce. It argues that mental health is not merely a social or healthcare concern but a fundamental determinant of human capital formation and long-term economic growth. Drawing upon a systematic review of interdisciplinary literature, the study highlights how mental health challenges originating during formative educational years significantly affect academic performance, skill acquisition, and future employability.
The analysis demonstrates that integrating structured mental health support within educational systems yields substantial economic benefits, including reduced healthcare expenditure, lower absenteeism and presenteeism, and enhanced workforce participation. Evidence suggests that school-based mental health interventions are highly cost-effective, often generating returns that exceed initial investments multiple times over. The study identifies key causal pathways linking educational mental health initiatives to economic outcomes: improved psychological resilience, better academic achievement, and increased labor productivity.
Furthermore, the research underscores the importance of adopting a societal perspective in policy design, accounting for both direct and indirect economic impacts of mental health interventions. It also highlights disparities across national contexts, noting the limited availability of economic data in low- and middle-income countries, thereby calling for more inclusive and comprehensive evaluations.
The findings advocate a paradigm shift from reactive to preventive and policy-driven approaches, positioning educational institutions as central hubs for mental health promotion and early intervention. The paper concludes that embedding mental health into educational policy frameworks is a strategic investment that fosters individual well-being, strengthens institutional effectiveness, and enhances macroeconomic stability.
